Thieves on drink spree

By Kelly Yates
THIRSTY thieves have targeted the Devon Meadows Football Club twice in the past week, stealing about 50 slabs of beer and pre mixed alcoholic drinks.
Police said the recent burglary occurred between 10pm on 21 June and 10.30am on 22 June at the club on the corner of Browns Road and Cross Street.
Police said the raiders broke into the property by cutting through four padlocked doors.
They said the alarm was not activated.
President of the club Michael Brick said burglaries had become a recent problem at the club.
He said there was a possibility that the thieves could be members or have some association with the club.
“We’re hoping that it’s no one at the club but there’s always a bad apple in the barrel,” he said.
“We can’t insure alcohol so all of the money is just lost. It’s very disappointing.”
Mr Brick said the club would be installing security cameras and putting up fencing around the club room.
Senior Constable Dean Marchant said that it was highly likely that the same thieves were involved with both burglaries.
He said that a witness saw two males wearing hooded jumpers edged with fur, at the club on the night of the first burglary on 16 June.
“We think the offenders could have knowledge of the local area and the club,” Sen Const Marchant said.
Police are urging anyone with information to contact Sen Const Dean Marchant at Narre Warren police on 9705 3111.
