Gas explosion rocks drivers

A CRANBOURNE man was lucky to escape when the gas cylinder under his car exploded last week.
The man was stationary at the traffic lights at the South Gippsland Highway/Wentworth Road intersection in Cranbourne North when the explosion occurred about 10.45am on Friday.
Witnesses claimed to hear a loud explosion before the Holden ute “disappeared in a cloud of vapour”.
CFA units from Cranbourne and Hallam were called in to control the incident.
Police and ambulance crews also attended.
Leading firefighter Andrew Currie said it was fortunate the explosion, the cause of which is still being investigated, did not result in a fire.
“The driver and the people in the cars next to him at the lights were extremely lucky.
“This is a timely reminder to owners of cars with gas systems fitted to have them regularly checked and a pressure test carried out every 10 years,” he said.
He said the damage was estimated about $3000.
