This bus goes at walking pace

THE Hampton Park Primary school bus is the only morning service in Casey that travels on the footpath.
Last Friday, the pint-sized pavement pounders were joined by local MP Anthony Byrne to celebrate Walk Safely to School Day.
Around 40 students, along with parents and teachers participated in the leisurely stroll to school, and Mr Byrne presented the morning walkers with certificates of participation as they passed through the school gates.
Teacher and program pioneer Mathew Williams said the walking bus helped build a strong sense of community among its participants.
“It began about three years ago and has grown into a popular program. It not only encourages kids to get active each morning, but also takes cars off the road and promotes a strong school community,” Mr Williams said.
Mr Byrne said the day was a great event and a lot of fun for the students.
“As a parent I know that many of us like to walk in the morning and it’s great to be able to walk to school with our kids,” he said.
“Hampton Park Primary School students can walk to school every day – with the Walking School Bus Program – and I would encourage every parent and student to get involved, where possible.”
The Hampton Park Primary School walking bus begins at the corner of Kathleen Court and Jeffrey Street each morning.
