KIDS are being encouraged to take their pushbike to school on Wednesday 12 March as part of Bicycle Victoria’s national Ride2School day.
The City of Casey is encouraging its 50,000 primary and secondary school students to take part in the day to promote active and healthy travel to school.
Schools participating in this year’s event include Berwick Lodge Primary School and Lynbrook Primary School.
City of Casey mayor Janet Halsall said being active on the way to school had many benefits.
“Students are more alert, happy and healthy and traffic congestion and greenhouse gas emissions are reduced,” she said.
“It’s a great opportunity for students to get some of their recommended daily 60 minutes of physical activity.”
Cr Halsall said the council was committed to the health and wellbeing of all community members.
Lynbrook Primary School assistant principal Colin Avery said this was the second year the school had been involved with Ride2School day.
He said it not only reminded kids of the importance of physical activities, but also helped tackle the traffic problems around the school.
“If more kids ride their bikes to school then this will decrease the number of cars, making it a safer environment,” Mr Avery said.
He said the students were looking forward to the annual event.
“Each child who rides their bike to school will receive a raffle ticket that will be drawn later that day, and the lucky winner will receive a prize or reward for their participation in the event,” he said.
