Speed blitz hits hard

A POLICE blitz on Casey motorists caught almost 100 speeding drivers in September.
Police intercepted 188 motorists along some of the city’s most notorious roads, including South Gippsland Highway, DandenongHastings Road, CranbourneFrankston Road and BaxterTooradin Road.
The operation followed a number of fatal collisions this year involving trucks.
A total of 99 drivers were caught speeding, 11 with cancelled or disqualified licences and 12 vehicles were found to be unregistered during the traffic operation.
Seat belt offences were also high on the police penalty list, with 18 drivers issued with infringement notices.
Task Force Acting Sergeant Allan Tickner reminded motorists of their responsibility to ensure the safety of their vehicles after eight drivers were apprehended with unsafe vehicles and 44 reports were submitted for smoking or noisy exhausts.
He said motorists should also be mindful of the fact that a truck needs more room than a car in which to brake.
“Because of their size and mass a truck can inflict much greater levels of damage and injury when a collision does occur,” he said.
Acting Sgt Tickner warned drivers never to cut in front of a truck that is approaching an intersection and not to underestimate the speed of a heavy truck.
“We will be continuing to focus on these busy roads as part of our continued goal of reducing the number and severity of injuries to all road users,” he said.
