THIS year marks the 30th anniversary of the Herb Thomas Memorial Trust awards, which recognise top students pursuing a career in media.
The awards will be presented at an annual awards dinner on Thursday 1 May and the community is invited to attend.
The trust was established in 1979 by the Rotary Clubs of Berwick, Pakenham and Narre Warren, in conjunction with the former City of Berwick and the former Shire of Pakenham, to perpetuate the memory of the late Herb Thomas.
Mr Thomas was the son of the founder of the Pakenham Gazette, Albert Edward, and was the editor for many years until the time of his death in 1979. The Rotary Club of Endeavour Hills became an official supporter of the trust in 1992.
The four Rotary clubs, and the City of Casey and Cardinia Shire Council, continue to support the work of the trust with annual awards being presented.
The trust has established a series of grants to assist graduates and students undertaking courses in printing and journalism.
This year, so far the trust has again unearthed another quality intake of up and coming students in the media field.
The awards will be presented at a special awards dinner, hosted by the Rotary Club of Berwick, on Thursday 1 May at Georgio’s Seafood and Steak House, 70 Old Princes Highway, Beaconsfield.
Marcus Kostelac, who was the winner of the award in 2001, has been secured as the guest speaker on the night.
Those wishing to attend the dinner can contact Sue Jolly at the City of Casey on 9705 5200 by 25 April to reserve a seat.
The dinner will run from 6.30pm and cost $30 per person, which is payable on the night by cash or cheque.
