Drinkers pay the price

By BRIDGET COOK

DRIVERS across Casey might be thinking twice before they get behind the wheel after a few alcohol drinks, with police catching 16 drink-drivers on the weekend.
Casey Highway Patrol conducted two operations on Saturday, aimed at removing impaired drivers from local roads.
Senior Sergeant John Felton said Operation Think Twice was held on Saturday afternoon, where a number of road stop sites were set up across Casey.
“More than 2100 drivers were tested at a number of locations in Casey and unfortunately 12 were detected in excess of the prescribed alcohol limits,” he said.
“The highest reading was a male aged in his fifties from Berwick who returned a reading of 0.124 per cent.
“His licence was immediately suspended and he was issued an infringement notice carrying a $614 fine and licence cancellation period of 12 months.”
The same night, police also conducted Operational Nocturnal, which Sen Sgt Felton said had a similar focus.
A further four drivers were caught for exceeding their alcohol limits.
Sen Sgt Felton said it was frustrating that people still weren’t getting the message.
“Results such as these are extremely disappointing and provide clear evidence to us that some people simply don’t understand the increased risks to themselves and others that come from driving while impaired,” he said.
“We will continue to target impaired driving and both operations will continue indefinitely.”
