Socially Speaking

In relation to Casey Fields Firms as Favourite, Star Community, Berwick, 8 November:

Karen:
Casey Fields for a suburb name is a joke. Everyone I’ve spoken to have said Ridgway is their preferred choice. Casey Fields is a sporting venue not a suburb name, there will be a lot of disappointed families if this is the name that gets appointed.

Jamie: Good name, better than the other poor options could be worse perhaps Tullyville.

Michelle Barry: As a resident of Selandra Rise I never received any notification of renaming Clyde North to any other name let alone a sporting complex. So how was I supposed to object. How ridiculous. I am disgusted in council’s blatant disregard for its ratepayers’ wishes. If this absolute waste of council funds goes ahead I hope they are pleased with themselves for inflicting a financial loss on residents who wish to sell their property. I bought a property in Clyde North and if I wish to sell in the future I will be selling a property that has now lost tens of thousands as its address is a sporting complex. Leave the names alone.

In relation to UN Mission, Star Community, Berwick, 14 November:

Naureen Choudhry: I think this would be an excellent initiative. On a trip to Canada last year, I was shocked to find out that Australia has a bad reputation overseas. As soon as I would tell people that I had come from Australia, the first question they would ask me is if Australians are very racist? I couldn’t understand why they were asking me this question as I myself have never experienced any racism, and I would re-assure them that Australia is a very multi-cultural and tolerant society and there was no overwhelming racism in Australia. The recent media coverage about riots in Melbourne and Sydney involving ethnic groups has made to international news leaving this imbalanced view of Australia as a racist country in the minds of Canadians, and surely other countries as well.
