THERE were dummies aplenty at Tooradin Primary School recently when students learnt how to resuscitate their mates.
Children in grades four to six practised their Dr ABC on mannequins at a special Resuscitate a Mate Day at the school.
Grade three/four teacher Leanne Fechner said a representative from the Life Saving Victoria educational program demonstrated basic first aid skills and resuscitation techniques to teach the kids how to deal with emergency situations, how to manage patients and basic life support.
“It was really good for the kids,” Mrs Fechner said. “They were first shown things on the whiteboard, then she demonstrated on mannequins and then they got to do it themselves.
“They loved it. I didn’t think they’d all get a chance to blow in the mannequin, but they had one each between pairs.
“There was a fair bit of role play, with one kid playing dead while the other revives them, while the one pretending to be dead kept on talking.”
The kids were also given a magnet to take home to put on their fridge showing what to do in an emergency situation.
Mrs Fechner said the grade three students were disappointed they didn’t get to take part as well.
“They said, ‘Grade threes might need saving too’,” she said, laughing.
