Careless drivers pay the price

POLICE are again urging people to lock up their cars and hide valuables as thefts from cars continue to increase in the Cranbourne area.
Detective Senior Constable Peter Carroll from Cranbourne CIU said a high number of thefts from cars over the last week occurred where the cars’ owners had been careless, despite police continually warning people to lock their cars.
He said there had been numerous thefts from and of cars parked outside homes, railway stations and shopping centres in which cars were left unlocked or valuables were left in plain view.
Detective Sergeant Larry Grimshaw said items stolen included laptops, mobile phones, cash, handbags and, on one occasion, horse riding equipment.
“People have really got to take proper care of their car, and property, and start locking it up,” he said.
There were at least six thefts in the Cranbourne central area in the last week, one in Cranbourne North, one in Cranbourne West, and one in Pearcedale.
Det Sen Const Carroll said people had to be particularly cautious around the shopping areas in central Cranbourne as it was the most targeted.
Anyone with information about a theft of or from car should contact Cranbourne Police on 5991 0600.
