Parliament visit for young historians

A GROUP of Alkira Secondary College students were recognised for their efforts in documenting the life of local war veterans during a visit to Parliament House.
The school’s Year-11 VCAL students were given the opportunity to visit Parliament House on Thursday 27 June with Narre Warren South MP Judith Graley.
The students and teachers got a special mention from Ms Graley during the tour for their Following in their Footsteps projects from earlier this year.
The project involved the students writing a biography of a war veteran.
It was believed that Alkira were the first school in Victoria to record the biographies of veterans on such a large scale.
“It was great to get recognition for our hard work and to have the experience to be shown around Parliament House alongside our peers, veterans, teachers and Judith Graley,” student Amy Hanks said.
Student Terrence Leveque said the tour was an interesting experience.
“The trip to Parliament House was great, full of art and busy politicians,” Terrence said.
Teagan Bennett said it was great to get mention for their project.
“When all our work was recognised in Parliament House, I was excited to know that the work I did about the veterans was recognised,” she said.
