Crime catcher retires

CRANBOURNE crime-catcher Ollie Gaspari was recognised for his 23-year commitment to the local police force on Friday after recently announcing his retirement.
Casey mayor Colin Butler presented the former Detective Senior Sergeant Gaspari with a community service award during a special presentation at Cranbourne Police headquarters on Friday afternoon. Later, friends and colleagues joined Mr Gaspari for a goodbye barbecue at the nearby racetrack. The 68-year-old was the oldest member of the Victorian Police Force before deciding to close the book on a 42-year career.
Mr Gaspari spent the past 23 years in the Cranbourne Criminal Investigation Unit (CIU).
Cranbourne CIU Detective Sergeant Larry Grimshaw said it would be tough to find a replacement for Mr Gaspari who did an exceptional job.
“It’s going to be hard to find someone who is as good at catching crims as he was,” he said.
“His shoes are going to be very hard to fill. He was very keen and motivated. He was an inspiration to the rest of us.”
“He’s going to be sorely missed.”
Locals are welcome to attend Mr Gaspari’s official send-off on 28 August at Cranbourne racecourse.
Those interested in attending can call 5991 0661.
