Mega splash for worthy cause

By BRIDGET COOK

ABOUT 100 swimmers are set to make a splash at Casey RACE next month to raise awareness and money for people living with multiple sclerosis (MS).
The 2013 Casey MS 24 Hour Mega Swim, which will be held on 6 and 7 July, aims to raise more than $20,000 to give people living with MS a better chance at living a fulfilling life.
Teams of up to 15 people will have one person swimming in the pool at all times during the 24-hour event.
All money raised at the swim funds the Go for Gold Scholarship Program that grants people living with MS the opportunity to fulfil their potential in life including pursuing opportunities in employment, sport, travel, education and the arts.
Narre Warren resident Ashlee Crisp, 14, took part in the inaugural event last year and won the Highest Fundraiser Award, raising more than $1400.
Ashlee, who is a state level swimmer based at Narre Warren Kings Club, said she was aiming to reprise her success in this year’s event.
“I told my swimming coach about the event last year and he thought it would be a great opportunity for our squad to get involved,” she said.
“We all really enjoyed it, so this year we’re entering three teams.
“It’s a good opportunity to get experience in the pool, work on technique and build fitness.”
Ashlee swam the midnight to noon shift last year, swimming 9.2 kilometres.
This year she’s set her goal at 10 kilometres, again volunteering for the midnight to noon shift.
“It was pretty tough last year,” she said.
“I was so tired and emotional at the end, I couldn’t even lift myself out of the pool.
“I just think it’s really important to take part and set a goal.
“It’s an amazing feeling doing something you love to help other people.”
Event manager Marika Sisa said part of the appeal of the event was the team work and camaraderie.
“People of all ages and all abilities swim together for a great cause, whether they swim one lap or one hundred,” she said.
The event is supported by the Kiwanis Club of Berwick, YMCA and City of Casey.
Casey mayor Amanda Stapledon will open the event on Saturday 6 July at noon.
