Shed on course

CRANBOURNE Community House has residents greased up with its plan for a community workshop.
Based on the concept of the Men’s Shed operating in Tooradin, the workshop will offer a range of free trade courses for both men and women.
Mayfield Ward councillor Kevin Bradford revealed the plan at last week’s Casey Council meeting, claiming the facility would enable locals to take part in a variety of household and mechanical training courses, including carpentry, woodwork and art and crafts.
He said the workshop, to be built next to the Community House, would be funded by the house, Rotary Club of Cranbourne and council.
“The possibility of a Men’s Shed in Cranbourne was raised some time ago by Cranbourne MP Jude Perera but it was unable to go ahead because no land or funds were allocated.
“Through the excellent efforts of Margaret O’Callaghan at the Community House we were able to put together a plan and design and allocated $25,000 towards the project.
“Cranbourne Rotary Club has also allocated $100,000,” he said.
Cr Bradford said the Rotary Club planned to keep costs to a minimum by using donated materials and involving members in the construction of the building.
“This will be a tremendous facility for the community.
“It will be a building for the community, built by the community.
“It just shows what happens when a local group does an excellent job working with council,” he said.
He said council would also hand over management of the Community House and workshop to the house when the current lease agreement expired in June 2008.
