THE Anzac spirit was alive at Alkira Secondary College last week when students and teachers held a number of services to commemorate the occasion.
The Cranbourne North school held three Anzac Day services last week to honour the sacrifices made by fallen soldiers as well as those who returned.
On Wednesday, some students headed to the Regis Sherwood Hostel, in Junction Village, to host an Anzac Day service there.
Then on Friday, the school hosted two services – one at Alkira and another at Hillsmeade Primary School.
Teacher Nicole Scott said all services went well.
“We have started running the services at Regis Sherwood Hostel to help out the RSLs and to demonstrate that the Anzac tradition is also important to the younger generation,” she said.
“There were a number of special guests at the ceremonies at Alkira Secondary College and Hillsmeade Primary School, including members from RAEME, Berwick RSL, Dandenong Cranbourne RSL and the Vietnam Veterans Association of Victoria – Education Team.”
“Our Year 11 VCAL students have also been writing biographies of veterans of Korea and Vietnam and these are going to be presented back to the veterans this month.”
Dandenong Cranbourne RSL sub-branch president John Wells presented the school with a descendant of the Lone Pine tree from Gallipoli, which the school will put in its memorial garden.
