Book a gift

THE Cranbourne Library has grown legs and is taking the joy of reading out into the community and into the hearts of preschoolers.
To encourage reading at home, the library will distribute 1000 books to children up to the age of five. In partnership with Windermere Child and Family services and the Federal Government’s Communities for Children Strategy, the Library Has Legs, Let’s Read early literacy program is designed to help children learn to read and write when they get to school.
Early years outreach officer at Cranbourne Library, Sandra Smith, said the program was designed to encourage parents to have fun with their young children, to develop a love of books, and to play with sounds and words.
“The joy of sharing books is a gift that you can give children from the time they are born,” she said.
She said the federally funded project aimed to help give toddlers the best possible start in life and to influence the contexts within which they lived – their family and community, and the broader social, economic and cultural environments.
The books will make their way into the community through organisations such as local community houses, maternal and child health centres, welfare organisations, playgroups and family day cares. Phone 5990 0150 for more information.
