Lyndhurst landfill will operate until 2040

LYNDHURST will continue to be the dumping ground for household waste for at least another 33 years.
Casey Council granted a permit extension for the Hallam Road Landfill last week – a move that will result in the SITA-run site continuing to operate until 2040.
Casey mayor Colin Butler said the decision would have a positive impact on the community in several ways.
“The decision to approve the extension of time for the Hallam Road Landfill was granted in light of the benefits to the community, such as the proposed $500,000 contribution to community activities, works or infrastructure to be funded by SITA. As well as access to a preferential tipping rate for local domestic waste refuse,” Cr Butler said.
Cr Butler was quick to explain that the Hallam Road site was different to the Lyndhurst toxic tip site in Greater Dandenong.
“Council will work closely with local residents to determine what community activities, works or infrastructure should be funded by SITA, with any activities or works to be located within two kilometres of the site,” he said.
Cr Butler said waste management costs were set to rise.
“However, with preferential tipping rates there will be less chance of local residents having to pay more,” he said.
He said the extension was granted in accordance with a number of stringent conditions – including any waste deposited is in accordance with the Environment Protection Authority licence and council standards.
