It’s in the blood

A CASEY theatre company renowned for its previous award winning productions is gearing up for its next performance, which is just a week away.
The Limelight Theatre Company is now about to present the first Australian production by a non-professional musical theatre group of Blood Brothers which is to be shown in Cranbourne.
The musical, though not widely known in Australia, broke grounds overseas, winning seven Tony awards and four prestigious Best Musical accolades.
The play, written by playwright Willy Russell, who brought to life such gems as Shirley Valentine and Educating Rita, is one of the longest running musicals in the London’s West End.
It tells the captivating tale of twin brothers Mickey and Eddie born into an impoverished family from Liverpool.
Deserted by her husband and unable to cope with her brood of nine children, their mother Mrs Johnstone gives away one of the boys at birth to the wife of her wealthy employer.
Years later, the brothers meet and become inseparable friends, never knowing that each is related to the other until circumstances lead to the truth being told… and a tragic ending.
Over the past 20 years, the central role of Mrs Johnstone has been played on Broadway and in London’s West End by such stars as Barbara Dickson, Kiki Dee, Helen Reddy, Petula Clark, Carole King and all four of the Nolan sisters.
Casts have also included Shaun and David Cassidy in the role of the twins and David Soul as the narrator.
Limelight Theatre’s cast includes Warren Davies as the Narrator, Victoria Zainal as Mrs Johnstone, Sally McKenzie as Mrs Lyons, Drew Downing as Mickey and Heath Harney as Eddie.
The musical runs from 2 to 17 March at the Cranbourne Community Theatre on Brunt Street, Cranbourne, and tickets are $32.50. To book call 0400 430 049.
