POLICE are urging people not to leave valuables in their cars after a series of recent thefts from cars.
On Saturday, a thief was spotted in action after the owner’s daughter came out of her Cranbourne house at 11pm to see a man in the driver’s seat reaching over to the passenger’s seat.
She yelled out then ran inside to get her mother.
By the time they got back the man had fled the Circle Drive property and nothing was stolen from the maroon Holden Commodore sedan.
Detective Senior Sergeant Bernie Kaminski from Cranbourne CIU said there had been a number of such incidents, especially in car parks.
He said in most of the incidents, thieves were breaking windows to steal items.
He urged people not to leave things visible from the outside of the car as it was only encouraging people to break in.
Sen Sgt Kaminski said replacing a side window could be more expensive than replacing the front windscreen.
If anyone witnesses a car being broken into, contact the Cranbourne CIU on 5991 0600.
