LOCAL firefighters returning home from Gippsland spent Christmas Eve putting out a scrub fire.
After a cool change in the weather, most firefighters based in Cranbourne and surrounds were overjoyed at being sent home for Christmas.
But on Christmas Eve many fought for several hours to control a blaze that started in Cranbourne.
About four hectares of scrub was burnt in an area near the CFA’s training complex at the end of Grant Street.
The fire started at 3pm and continued into the evening.
Cranbourne CFA Fire Officer Phil Charles said three trucks from Cranbourne as well as 11 from surrounding areas and a helicopter worked to keep the fire under control.
No property was damaged and no one was hurt in the fire.
Mr Charles said a cool change late in the afternoon helped control the blaze.
No rest for weary firefighters
