Lions award study potential

CRANBOURNE’S youth are being given a starting chance at high school with a Lions Club scholarship.
Six year seven students from local secondary colleges will be awarded $125 each which will go towards books, school fees, camps and uniforms.
The first student to be awarded the scholarship is Marnebek School’s Joshua Zaffiro.
The award, now called the Lions Club of Cranbourne Youth Scholarship Award, was initiated several years ago by a past president of the club.
The award was set up to find Cranbourne students who showed potential in their studies.
Cranbourne Lions Club president Diane Barker said the student did not necessarily have to be an A grade student but someone who showed initiative and strived to do their best and was willing to learn to make a difference in his or her education level.
Joshua has been at Marnebek School for six years.
Ms Barker said Joshua excelled at numeracy and worked well in class.
She said he was also one of the fastest runners in the school and participated well in sports sessions.
“Joshua has a wicked sense of humour and he enjoys a joke,” she said.
“He is also excellent at art and works well on projects.”
Ms Barker said the scholarship money went directly to the school and it was up to the parents how that money was spent.
“It’s not a great amount but it helps,” she said.
Other winners at local secondary schools will be announced in the coming weeks.
