A HAMPTON Park church is reopening this weekend in a historic building with a new look.
Stained glass windows and new facilities will be part of the package at the Holy Trinity Anglican Church on the corner of Somerville Road and The Fairway.
The church’s vicar, the Reverend Ian Savage said the old church, which was conveyed to Hampton Park by truck from Sorrento in 1986, was great but dark, small and cramped.
“It looked fantastic from the outside but not so fantastic on the inside,” Reverend Savage said.
The church is now filled with light and has increased seating capacity, meeting rooms and a state of the art kitchen.
“We now have a building worthy of Hampton Park,” Rev Savage said.
The church has overcome a lot to get to its current state after starting building work seven months ago.
In September, the church building was ransacked and vandalised with the vandals using builders’ tools to cause damage to the walls and plasterwork.
They then threw adhesive and plaster coating over the walls, windows and floors.
In May, thieves broke into the building site and stole tools and food items.
Rev Savage said he was now looking forward to reopening the church this weekend.
Celebrations will include a sausage sizzle, a kids’ colouring-in competition with the works put on display, and a chance to look around the church this Saturday from 10am to 4pm.
On Sunday at 3pm there will be a big reopening service led by Bishop John Wilson and the winners of the art competition will be announced.
