A GROUP of Hampton Park Primary School students has proved their excellence in maths and English.
Principal Christine Wakeling said the school was proud of the 18 students who received five High Distinctions, seven Distinctions and 13 Credits in maths, English, writing and spelling when they participated in the recent University of New South Wales International Competitions and Assessments for Schools (ICAS).
The ICAS is conducted every year across Australia and in 12 other countries, with over 1.7 million entrants worldwide.
Director of EAA, associate professor Peter Knapp, said the ICAS assessed knowledge, problem-solving and higher-order thinking skills in key aspects of maths, science, English, writing, computer skills and spelling for students from years three to 12.
“It is the only independent, large-scale assessments in Australia that assess student performance in the key curriculum areas across each of the years of schooling from years three to 12.
“The ICAS provide comparative data on the skills that students need in education, the wider community and the workplace of the future,” Mr Knapp said.
He said one of the special benefits of the competition was that schools, parents and students receive detailed diagnostic information, allowing students to monitor their progress from year to year and identify individual strengths and weaknesses.
