MORE than 1700 people turned up at the Cranbourne races on Sunday, but thoughts were not all on the horses.
Locals lined up to meet some of the AFL’s top players who spent their weekend off to take part in a Monster Garage Sale of AFL clothing and merchandise.
Hawthorn ruckman Peter ‘Spider’ Everitt organised the day, helping to raise $4000 for Hawthorn’s chosen charity, Mallee Accommodation and Support Program.
The likes of Carlton star Brendan Fevola, St Kilda’s Fraser Gehrig, Kangaroo Nathan Thompson and Hawthorn forward Mark Williams were on hand to help sell the gear, sign autographs and talk football with the children.
Cranbourne Turf Club chief executive officer Neil Bainbridge said it was great to see people come out and support the cause.
“It was also great to see the players down here on their weekend off,” Mr Bainbridge said.
“They mixed and mingled with the crowd, and took photos with the kids and some big kids as well.”
There was plenty for the kids to do with a free bouncy castle, mini golf, an AFL kicking simulator, a gold coin barbecue and plenty of ice cream.
One lucky racegoer also won a football jumper.
