Plan changed for Aldi

CONSTRUCTION of an Aldi supermarket in Cranbourne will start within months, according to a Casey councillor.
Mayfield Ward councillor Kevin Bradford said changes had been made to the current Cranbourne Town Centre Structure Plan to allow for the supermarket to be built on Bakewell Street and Childers Street, west of Codrington Street.
He said a planning permit had been submitted to council and development would start once the 21day public display period had expired.
“If council accepts the application after the exhibition period then construction will commence ASAP.
“This is a huge win for Cranbourne that will bring great benefits to the east side of High Street,” he said.
Cr Bradford said an Aldi supermarket would encourage greater competition between other major grocery outlets in the area and create extra jobs.
“Aldi will bring a different range of products but bring more competition to other mainstream supermarkets, which is good news for shoppers.
“Also the addition of Aldi will not add to the blight of abandoned shopping trolleys lying around the streets because they already use coinoperated trolleys.
“I haven’t heard any objections to this proposal and I can’t see why anyone would. This supermarket will be great,” he said.
The supermarket will join retail giants Coles and Safeway, community supermarket IGA and fresh food centre Market Cranbourne in the area.
