CRANBOURNE man Ian Brandon has received a $1000 thank-you for his contribution to the community.
Cranbourne Chamber of Commerce last night presented the inaugural Community Award at its annual general meeting at Trios Sports Club.
Chamber vice-president Kate Parkinson said the award was born from a desire to recognise and honour individuals who worked hard to give back to the local community.
“And by doing so, positively impact the quality of life for residents and organisations in Cranbourne,” she said.
The chamber whittled nominations down to three finalists, including Debbie Medley and winner Mr Brandon.
“Both Ian and Debbie shone out from the crowd, showing a true community spirit in everything they do,” Ms Parkinson said.
Mr Brandon is “the friendly face of Casey RACE”.
“Ian is not employed by Casey RACE, nor is he a volunteer. He is a regular member of the Cranbourne community who visits the centre each week for his own rehabilitation,” Ms Parkinson said.
“His big smile, kind heart and engaging nature draw staff and members to him.
“Ian has a natural ability to locate people that are lonely or need support, engaging those who otherwise may be socially excluded.”
Mr Brandon regularly invites people to lunch at the RSL, “bringing individuals together and creating a stronger community”.
He recently provided a $3000 grant the local multiple sclerosis (MS) group received to Casey RACE so it could run a weekly exercise class for people with the condition.
“Ian continues to remain positive despite any personal hardship and is a strong and invaluable community force within Cranbourne and Casey RACE,” Ms Parkinson said.
“Without people like Ian, the world would definitely be a less positive and sunny place.”
Mr Brandon was humble about the achievement.
“What I do in the community is really nothing,” he said.
“I get to speak to a lot of people and the reward in that is just amazing.”
The chamber plans to present the Community Award again next year.
