The Australian Red Cross is reminding Victorians that blood donations are still desperately needed even through lockdown.

Donating blood is one of the permitted reasons to leave home as it falls under care and caregiving.

But according to the Red Cross, while demand for blood is at its highest level in over a decade, only one in two appointments is being kept.

A number of donation centres are currently open across the state, including at Pakenham Library, Balla Balla Community Centre in Cranbourne East and Narre Warren North Hall.

Donation sites are safe, with extra precautions being taken to ensure the safety of donors and staff including non-contact temperature checks, increased cleaning and extra questions for donors.

Donors are able to donate blood seven days after receiving a Covid jab.
