Narre Warren SES was kept busy on Tuesday 12 February after strong winds lashed the region.

Unit Controller Damian Burns said crews responded to four calls for help in Casey as winds of up to 65km/h were recorded according to the Bureau of Meteorology.

Crews tarped the roof of a house in Rocky Street, Cranbourne East about 11.30am.

“A number of tiles were ripped in a certain place. That can often happen when the wind come in very tight swirl,” Mr Burns said.

“It’s like a vortex and that can lift up tiles of a distance of half-a-metre and drop them back on the house.

“That can happen with sudden wind gusts. I’m surprise that we didn’t have more calls from a very short gusty spell.

Crews also tarped a fire damaged roof in Stratus Court in Hampton Park.

“You can no longer trust the rafters. We actually worked from the ground and pull a tarp over, it was only a small amount of damage,” Mr Burns said.

Mr Burns added crew’s also tarped roofs for a home in Berwick and Narre Warren that had tile damage. “We come in and make it safe and reduce people’s anxiety in regards to further damage,” he said.

“We have a number of techniques to make it water safe.”

Across the South-East there was a total of 29 calls for help.
