ANZAC Day holds special meaning for Australians across the country and for Cranbourne footballer Kirsten McLeod, who was part of the now intwined tradition of combined football and Anzac celebrations.
McLeod, 19, from Sandhurst, represented the Victorian Women’s Football League (VWFL) in a clash against the combined Australian Defence Forces (ADF) team at Shepley Oval.
The occasion meant a lot to McLeod – as she was willing to forgo watching her beloved Essendon play in the AFL’s traditional Anzac Day clash – but she was proud to don the VWFL Anzac jumper and represent the league.
“It was a real honour to play against the ADF, so it was nice just to be a part of the game,” McLeod said.
“I missed my football game, barrack for Essendon, but got to play against the ADF on Anzac Day which was incredible.”
Although the result did not go the VWFL’s way – with the ADF combined forces taking a 8.6 (54) to 7.5 (47) win, says McLeod.
“It’s an honour to play with them (the ADF) and they’re great people,” McLeod said.
“It was a great match – only seven points difference at the end of it and it was really good to play in.
“I think I did alright – played half forward and midfield and put me in a position I like.
“The ADF was running all day though – so it was hard to keep up with them.”
McLeod continued on her successful ways in her season opener for Cranbourne Division 3/4 this week, snaring five goals as the Eagles smashed Jacana 12.11 (83) to 0.2 (2) at Casey Fields.
McLeod hopes to earn a promotion to Cranbourne’s Division 1 team in weeks to come.
