Paint a different picture

WHILE many believe the only way to find a job is to simply search, Michelle Sanders has discovered the impact that painting can have on one’s ability to find employment.
On Wednesday 5 December a workshop was hosted at the Hampton Park Community House by local organisation Kaleidoscope.
Facilitator of the program and member of Kaleidoscope Michelle Sanders said the workshop called Putting Your Best Foot Forward was held for those who are currently unemployed, and said its focus was to change participants’ mindset so they are better placed to get a job.
“The idea is to instil a sense of confidence and concentration on the strengths that the individuals have,” Ms Sanders said.
The co-ordinator said that the way individuals see themselves can restrict them from getting a job, particularly if they see themselves in a negative light.
“Sometimes we get stuck in a place and we don’t see all aspects of ourselves,” Ms Sanders said.
The leaders of the activity guide participants through their work, resulting in each student completing an abstract painting.
Each piece of work incorporated a road, being the main feature of every artwork.
Ms Sanders said by the end of the session, each piece of work looks similar, but also very different.
She said one of the purposes of the workshop is to help these people see themselves differently and focus more on their strengths.
“It’s about seeing yourself as others see you,” the organiser said.
The activity last week was considered a trial, with plans to run a five-week course early next year.
Ms Sanders, along with Jennifer Koch, hope that people within the community will see the benefits of artwork, in helping them to alter their mindset and, therefore, be better equipped to find employment.
She said those who attended the session last week were enthusiastic about returning.
“People said they would love to come and do the next one,” she said.
Next year’s program is planned to begin in the first term and will be designed specifically for those who are unemployed at the time.
