A NEW project aimed at getting children involved in recreational fishing reeled off in Cranbourne on Saturday.
The Federal Minister for Fisheries and Conservation, Senator Eric Abetz, launched the Futurefish Foundation’s introductory project for children.
The Kids Come Try Fishing Day saw children from around the area try their hand at fishing at Casey Fields on Saturday in a bid to get children involved in the sport.
Cranbourne fishing identity Paul Worsteling from the IFISH TV program, along with volunteers from Fishcare Victoria, provided tuition to children on the day.
The first 500 children were given a free fishing rod, reel with line, lure and an IFISH fishing cap signed by Mr Worsteling and were let loose on the lake, which had been stocked with yearling rainbow trout.
“The importance of recreational fishing should not be underestimated because it provides many benefits for regional communities,” Senator Abetz said.
“There is a high level of participation in fishing and it has significant economic, employment, social and lifestyle benefits.”
