Extension for learning centre

MERINDA Park Learning and Community Centre is one step closer to securing vital extensions following a Casey Council decision to add the facility to its priority list.
Councillors at last week’s council meeting voted to refer $115,000 to the draft 2006/07 capital works program to construct two additional classrooms, extra work preparation space, storage and upgrade the computer training room.
Council officers acknowledged the centre was operating at capacity after a meeting with MPLCC staff earlier in the month.
The proposed extension is estimated to cost about $165,000.
The centre will apply for a $50,000 State Government grant under the Modernising Neighbourhood Houses program, leaving council to contribute the remaining funds.
Mayfield Ward councillor Steve Beardon said the centre was in desperate need of room, with staff forced to hold classes in the kitchen.
