It’s Dog v Golf Ball

– Kelly Yates
THE race between man and dog will be on at this year’s Tricodes Day.
Settlers Run Golf and Country Club professional Stephen Kent will drive a golf ball to try to beat a sprinting greyhound over 300 metres. Whoever crosses the line first will be declared the winner.
Cranbourne Turf Club chief executive Neil Bainbridge said it would be a real challenge for Mr Kent to hit the ball 300 metres.
“Not only is it a long hit but it also has to be straight,” he said. “I doubt he’ll beat the dog.”
Mr Kent said he would be somewhat embarrassed if he was beaten by a dog. “It’s a great event, it’s exciting but I am nervous about it,” he said.
Mr Kent said the outcome depended entirely on the weather, and he hoped there would be no wind to speak of.
He said he had previously hit a golf ball 300 metres but not in front of an expected crowd of 5000 people.
“I only have one shot at it so the pressure is on,” he said. “I can only hope the greyhound is a slow one.”
