A RETIRED Cranbourne builder is the 100,000th Victorian to receive a Seniors Sunday Pass to ride public transport for free.
Gerald Fitzgerald, 72, was presented with the pass by Minister for Senior Victorians Gavin Jennings at a special celebration at Cranbourne Railway Station last Friday.
To mark the milestone, Mr Fitzgerald, who has lived in Cranbourne since 1962, was also awarded with 50 seniors daily tickets valued at $150 and a first class pass to anywhere in Victoria on V-Line.
The Seniors Sunday Pass allows free train, tram and bus rides in Melbourne and some regional cities on Sundays for seniors holding the pass.
Mr Jennings said the pass was designed to encourage people to use public transport during off-peak times and support senior Victorians in leading active and healthy lives.
“This travel initiative is another good reason for senior Victorians to get out, get active, socialise with their friends and go for their lives,” Mr Jennings said.
The free Sunday travel applies to all travel within zones one, two and three, and regional city bus networks including Geelong, Ballarat, Bendigo, Warrnambool, Mildura, Moe, Morwell and Traralgon.
Cranbourne MP Jude Perera encouraged all Victorian seniors who did not already have a Seniors Card to apply as soon as possible.
Application forms for the Seniors Sunday Pass are available from Connex premium station, staffed V/Line stations, the MetShop at Melbourne Town Hall and selected Metcard retail agents.
