FOUR Cranbourne CFA volunteers joined a strike team to fight fires on Kangaroo Island on Monday.
The firefighters hopped on board a Devon Meadows tanker and led a convoy of trucks to South Australia in front of crews from Berwick, Beaconsfield, The Basin, Wandin and Mt Eliza.
They set off from Dandenong Fire Station on Monday morning to well wishes from their CFA compatriots as the intense fire season began.
They then joined brigades at the South Australian Country Fire Service Training Ground for overnight accommodation before being ferried early on Tuesday morning to the island.
Overnight shift crews were also being flown out from Tullamarine Airport on Tuesday morning.
A CFA spokeswoman said the volunteers were not expected to return until Friday.
However she said they could be stationed there longer depending on the weather on Kangaroo Island or if the CFA were requested to stay longer.
