The Casey Indoor Leisure Centre will be the home of the new Chisholm Sports Academy Basketball Program, once upgrades are completed in May this year.
The program is designed to cater for aspiring high performance basketball players and coaches, offering both males and females the opportunity to combine their sporting goals with quality education and career outcomes.
The City of Casey is currently undertaking a major redevelopment of the facility, which will open in May and is managed by the YMCA.
The basketball program is nationally accredited and provides a recognised qualification with pathways to sporting industry careers and higher education.
Chisholm program manager, Phil Shelley said the newly refurbished venue would enable the program to operate at its full potential.
“The centre’s state of the art facilities will make it the ideal location for the basketball academy,” he said.
Casey Indoor Leisure Centre Manager, Ian Jenkins said the arrangement between Chisholm and the leisure centre would be beneficial for all involved.
“The YMCA is delighted to host the elite-level training program which provides a nationally accredited qualification.”
Chisholm has enlisted the services of Brendan Joyce as the basketball director.
Mr Joyce most recently served as head coach and high performance manager of the Australian Women’s National Basketball Program from 2012 to 2016 with responsibilities including head coach of the Australian Senior Women’s Program (The Opals), technical director of Women’s Basketball at Basketball Australia, head of the Basketball Australia Opals Centre of Excellence program at the Australian Institute of Sport and head coach of the World University Games Australian Team.
