POSSUM Magic author Mem Fox headlined the Casey-Cardinia Library Corporation (CCLC) Literacy Expo on Thursday 14 May to a full audience of parents, teachers, carers and professionals.
Mem Fox spoke about the role of parents and teachers as equal collaborators in children learning to read along with other guest speakers Barbie Bates and Mark Carthew.
In its second year, the expo was held at the Balla Balla Community Centre and Cranbourne Library with refreshments and 12 service providers available for a chat in the expo.
Customer Services manager at CCLC Pru Menzies said the day was a fantastic event with most sessions booked out.
“It went smoothly because we had all the experience from last year to run all the sessions simultaneously, we were a little bit more organised than last year,” she said.
With more than 200 chairs set up for Mem Fox’s session, Ms Menzies said there was an increasing demand from parents not knowing where to seek help if their child was experiencing difficulty reading.
“The expo is for parents of reluctant readers and children that come from bilingual households as well as caregivers, teachers and anybody that works with children aged zero to eight that are experiencing difficulties reading,” she said.
The free event featured information stalls, displays, seminars, workshops, certificates of attendance, door prizes and showbags.
